Routine maintenance for your computer involves taking regular steps that help your computer run smoother, more secure and less cluttered. While some routine computer maintenance tasks prevent future problems like viruses or data loss, others free up space and even help resolve software issues. Whether you have a PC or Mac, you can install updates, check for viruses, maintain your hard drive, backup files and perform other simple tasks to keep your computer in good shape. Here are a few helpful tips:

  • Make sure your computer is connected to a Surge Protector or UPS (Battery Backup). Surge protection is one of the simplest things we can do to keep our equipment safe.
  • Blow out your computer monthly in dusty environments (such as a warehouse), or every 6 months in a home office. If you’re using an air compressor, be sure to use short bursts and hold the nozzle at least 4-6 inches from components. Never use a vacuum cleaner.
  • Clean your mouse and keyboard. While you’re blowing out your computer, also go ahead and blow out your keyboard.
  • (Gently) clean your monitor. Use LCD Screen Cleaner or electronic wipes only. You should not use household cleaners such as Windex, especially liquids containing ammonia.
  • Make sure you have a backup and that it is running properly. If disaster strikes and you need to recover your files from a backup, it better work. Otherwise your data may be lost forever. To prevent such a tragedy, you should check your backup regularly. It also doesn’t hurt to back up your backup.
  • Perform File Maintenance. Uninstall Unwanted Programs. Sort through the random files on your desktop and downloads folder. Empty your Recycle Bin (Windows) or Trash (MacOS).
  • Run Full Virus and Malware Scans often, at least weekly. Correctly setting up and running an antivirus scan on your computer is one of the best starting defenses for keeping your system free of malicious software. If you are using Allpro EDR, this step is unnecessary as you are protected and monitored in real-time.
  • Make sure you have the latest updates. It is critical to install Windows security updates to protect your computer from malicious attacks. In the long run, it is also important to install software updates, not only to access new features, but also to be on the safe side in terms of security loopholes being discovered in outdated programs.
